Humbaba and Shamhat meets Claude Monet - Saint Lazare Station (1877)
Description
This painting is entitled Saint Lazare Station which was painted in 1877. Monet previously painted landscapes of rural areas, then in 1877 returned to Paris and began painting a series of paintings of Saint Lazare Station, Paris. Monet's intention to make a series of paintings of Lazare Station, received support and permission from the Director of the French Railway Company (Compagnie des Chemins de fer de l'Ouest) so that many works of painting about Lazare Station could be completed.
The painting of railroad tracks was not an ordinary painting for the impressionists at that time, but became the main motive for impressionist artists to answer the call of their time. They attempted to translate the historical calling they faced as well as the 19th century zeitgeist with the Industrial Revolution, which led to mass-scale industrialization and also the emergence of the railroad industry in response to the need for factories to ship their products.
