Description

The painting is entitled Leonardo's Self Portrait - Portrait of a Man in Red Chalk by Leonardo da Vinci in 1512. Leonardo da Vinci himself actually made several portraits of himself in different years -different. However, his self-portrait, which he made using red chalk, has become his iconic painting because it represents the spirit of the times. Leonardo da Vinci painted himself at the age of about 60 so that Da Vinci looked old and had a thick beard. Da Vinci in his old age was known no longer as a painter, but also a polymath. Da Vinci wrote many works in various fields of science, even in his time he helped design the design of the proto-airplane which was inspired by a Muslim scientist, Abbas ibn Firnas who is known as the designer of the early proto-aircraft. Da Vinci also conducted various laboratory experiments on various natural sciences and also conducted social research. This is the raison d'etre why Da Vinci is also known as the "Man of the Renaissance." Of the several portraits of Da Vinci, only this one in red chalk is included in Da Vinci's 10 magnum opus, for it became Da Vinci's icon as "Renaissance Man."
