Hashim Djalal is an Indonesian diplomat and the father of Dino Patti Djalal. Hashim is credited with compiling the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) which was ratified by the United Nations on December 10, 1982. UNCLOS compiled by Hashim Djalal made Indonesia sovereign over its seas. This has made him known internationally as an expert on international law of the sea. The award for his services made Padjadjaran University inaugurate him as a Professor of International Law. His inaugural speech on Foreign Policy Facing the 21st Century, at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Padjadjaran University, on June 24, 1996. The speech which contained Indonesia's geopolitical views to face the challenges of the 21st century, was later recorded. Some of Hashim Djalal's views in this book are still relevant today.
