Humbaba Meets Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn - Night Watch (1642)
Description
This painting entitled Night Watch was
made by the famous Dutch painter, Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn in 1642. This
painting is Rembrandt's most famous and monumental work. This painting depicts
the story of the Dutch independence struggle against Spanish colonialism. In
the middle of the painting there are two figures of Dutch independence
fighters, Captain Frans Banning Cocq and Lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburgh
while on guard and night patrols, to prevent attacks by their Spanish enemy.
This painting is on display at the Rijkmuseum Amsterdam, but it is no longer
the authentic version of the painter but a restored version. Because the
original painting was vandalized in 1911 by a former shoemaker and former
ship's chef who lost his job. They were stressed and angry, as a result they vandalized
this painting. This painting was later restored from the damage caused by
vandalism, so the version of the painting that we know is an original work that
has been restored.
