Description
Sekaten in Surakarta
Every year in the month of Maulud[1] from the 5th to the 11th, for seven days and seven nights straight, residents of Surakarta carried out the Sekaten ceremony (Mulud tradition in Java). In 1888, the commemoration of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad was held on Friday 9 November. During this event, the mosques were surrounded by people, sellers, and Sekaten Gamelan ensembles. In the park, there were many Chinese and Koja people selling various goods, toys, jewelry, Dutch and Chinese food and drinks, and there were plenty of shows to watch. Sekaten this year was more crowded than Sekaten in 1887.
