Gilgamesh Meets Vincent Van Gogh - Café Terrace at Night (1888)
Description
This painting, which was made in 1888, is
entitled Café Terrace at Night. This painting depicts the poetic and
serene atmosphere of the night in a cafe in Arles, France. Van Gogh was so
fascinated by the beauty of this cafe at night, Van Gogh once sent a letter to
his sister: “I painted a night painting without black which was replaced by
beautiful blues and purples. The surrounding green is illuminated by a hint of
yellow sulfur and lemon green. It's so much fun to paint the night on the
spot.” The historic cafe where Van Gogh painted this painting, is still in
France and is a tourist destination for Van Gogh admirers.
