Description
This
painting is entitled Ball du Moulin De La Galette or Dance at Le
moulin de la Galette which was painted by Renoir in 1876. This painting
depicts people relaxing with their families at the Moulin de la Galette, a
place in the Montmare District, Paris. Seen in this painting people are busy
chatting with their families and friends. They spend their free time talking,
dancing, eating galettes. It can be seen that Renoir describes the poetic
atmosphere with a touch of his signature impressionism. This work is one of
Renoir's best works, no wonder so many people want to collect it. This painting
has changed hands several times until it was last owned by Ryoei Sato, a
Japanese businessman. Ryoei Sato purchased this painting on May 17, 1990, from
the widow of John Hay Whitney, the former United States ambassador to Britain.
Sato bought this painting for 78 million dollars, the purchase of this painting
in its time became one of the most expensive painting sales in the world, after
the purchase of Portrait of Dr. Gachet by Van Gogh which was also purchased by
Ryoei Sato in May 1990.
