Gilgamesh Meets Vincent Van Gogh - Portrait of Dr. Gachet (1890)
Description
This painting is entitled Portrait of Dr.
Gachet, this work was created in 1890. At this time Van Gogh was mentally
disturbed, he cut off his left ear and suffered serious injuries. His brother
Theodore van Gogh sent Vincent van Gogh to undergo psychiatric treatment at a
mental hospital in the city of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France. In May 1890, Van
Gogh left Saint-Rémy and moved to Auvers-sur-Oise to be closer to Dr.Paul
Gachet and Theo. Dr Gachet is also an amateur painter and has treated several
other artists – the doctor himself was recommended by Camille Pissarro, a
painter too. After being treated by dr., Gachet, Van Gogh did not feel his
illness was cured, instead he felt that dr. Gachet is sicker than him or just
as sick. Later, they began to get to know each other and Van Gogh began to open
up to dr. Gaches. Van Gogh wrote the painting of dr. This gachet and painting
became one of Van Gogh's finest paintings.
